HBOT and Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral Palsy affects around 500,000 people in the U.S. and nearly 7000 children are diagnosed with it every year. CP has a variety of causes including: head trauma, oxygen deprivation, infection of brain-tissues, stroke and many more. The most common symptoms are impaired movement, seizure and spasticity, and difficulty seeing, hearing or speaking.
Early pioneers in hyperbaric therapy discovered that areas of the brain in CP patients were in a sleeping state. They thought these dormant areas could be woken up using hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
After HBOT, researchers discovered that these dormant areas of the brain had somewhat recovered and could be further restored with more treatments.

How it works
Like much of HBOT research, there are different opinions on why the treatment works so well. Some believe that a lack of oxygen in the brain causes cells to shut down and that by forcing oxygen into the tissues they can be started back up again. Others believe that lack of oxygen caused by swelling in the brain prevents myelin sheaths from forming correctly and that HBOT forces oxygen into the damaged areas, constricting blood vessels and relieving the swelling. Also, as we see in the treatment of other conditions, HBOT creates the perfect environment for cell and tissue growth and the high concentration of oxygen boosts the immune-system’s ability to fight disease.
